Alturas has a community-focused outdoor event to look forward to this month. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says student Migratory Bird Day art entries will be displayed during the Sportsman’s Outdoor Expo at Veteran’s Park on Saturday, June 27, 2026, where members of the public can vote for their favorite.
Vote for local student artwork
The contest asks fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students to create fully colored artwork featuring a female Wilson’s phalarope in breeding plumage. The entry receiving the most votes at the expo will be used on the flyer for the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge World Migratory Bird Day event scheduled for October 10, 2026.
Make a day of it in Alturas
If you are coming from another part of Modoc County, combine the event with a meal at an Alturas restaurant, a walk around downtown, or a visit to the wildlife and birding guide. Travelers staying overnight can also compare local lodging in Alturas.
